Microsoft says future Windows will be powered by AI

The AI revolution is happening right now, and while some Windows features are already powered by artificial intelligence, Microsoft is ready to bet big on this new concept for the future of its operating system.

Microsoft’s Panos Panay spoke about integrating AI into the Windows experience during AMD’s keynote at CES 2023, explaining that everything we do on the operating system will be reinvented as artificial intelligence take over.

According to Neowin, Microsoft is expected to bet even more on the power of the cloud with Panay himself explaining that the next version of Windows “will blur the line between cloud and edge.”

Whether or not Panay is referring to Windows 12 or a version of Windows that would launch later in the decade is something that remains to be seen.

AI will reinvent the way everything is on Windows. Like these big generative models, think of language models code generation models, and image models. These patterns are so powerful, so useful, and personal.

They are also very computationally intensive, so we have never been able to do this before.

We’ve never seen these intense workloads at this scale before, and they’re here.

“We’re going to need an operating system that blurs the line between cloud and edge, and that’s what we’re doing right now,” Panay reportedly said.

Windows 12 for 2025?

According to sources familiar with the matter, the launch of Windows 12 is scheduled for 2024 or 2025 with work on the operating system already started behind closed doors at Microsoft.

However, to date, Microsoft continues to work on Windows 11, so a Windows 12 start in 2025 makes more sense, as that is also the year Windows 10 is expected to be retired.

That would allow the company to continue supporting two operating systems, as it does today.
